Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I have to dial 9-1-1? If I call the fire station direct would it save time? ?
It is very important to call 9-1-1 during an emergency. The firefighters might not be at the station when you call. Even if they are, the firefighters will still have to activate 9-1-1 so that other emergency responders are notified. On the other hand, the 9-1-1 emergency system is designed to save valuable seconds. When you dial 9-1-1, the system routes the call to the police or fire unit that is closest to your home. Only call the fire station with non-emergency business.
Why do fire engines respond to medical emergencies? ?
All Montgomery County Fire Rescue firefighters are trained to handle medical emergencies. In most areas, paramedics are assigned to the engines. In some cases, the fire engine will be able to get to your location faster than an ambulance, so our arrival provides emergency medical care sooner -- and during medical emergencies, time is the most important factor.
When there is only a small fire, why do so many fire engines respond? ?
A "Standard Response Plan" policy is utilized on all responses. This system is a pre-designated formula that determines the amount and type of equipment sent to the incident. For example, a residential structure fire includes a minimum of five engine companies, two ladder trucks, one rescue squad, an ambulance or medic unit, two Battalion Chiefs and two Fire Chiefs. If it is determined that some of these units are not needed, they are released by the Incident Commander.
How quickly does the fire department respond to a call?
On average, a Montgomery County Fire Rescue unit will arrive on scene within 3-4 minutes.
Why are window broken or holes cut in the roof?
As a fire burns, it moves quickly, upward then outward releasing in its path super heated toxic gases. Breaking the windows and/or cutting holes in the roof (called ventilation) stops the damaging and dangerous movement of superheated smoke and gases enabling the firefighter to fight the fire more efficiently and safely. Ultimately resulting in less damage to the structure in the long run.
Am I allowed to use fireworks in Montgomery County?
ALL fireworks are illegal in Montgomery County. We encourage you and your family to attend a community fireworks display.
How do I create an escape plan for my home or business? The four basic steps in creating an escape plan for your home includes: drawing a floor-plan of your home; creating a meeting place; practicing your escape plan; and making sure your exit drill is realistic.
How should I plan for a disabled family member during a fire?
Assure that you have a well-defined escape plan. Make sure that people who are confined to a wheelchair have immediate access to their wheelchair when an emergency occurs and notify fire rescue immediately that there are people in need of assistance.
What kind of fire extinguisher should I buy for my home?
Homeowners should buy an extinguisher that can handle Class A-B-C fires. This type of extinguisher is designed to extinguish fires that usually occur in homes including wood, paper, flammable liquids, and electrical fires.
Do I need to put a smoke alarm in every room? How many do I need? ?
Smoke alarms should be placed outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. On floors without bedrooms, smoke alarms should be installed in or near living areas such as dens, living rooms, or family rooms. Remember to test the alarms regularly and change the batteries when you change your clocks!
What do firefighters do when they are not on calls fighting fires? ?
Firefighters work 24-hour shifts at their duty station. Training and equipment maintenance takes up a good deal of firefighters time when they are not on call. Firefighters constantly train so they are ready to handle any type of emergency. Firefighters also conduct fire safety inspections in businesses and various properties.
